PM Surya Ghar: Rajnandgaon’s Solar Success Story

Rajnandgaon district in Chhattisgarh has emerged as a frontrunner in the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with 9,078 applications, 2,033 rooftop solar installations, and subsidies disbursed to 1,443 households. Driven by Collector Jitendra Yadav and CEO Suruchi Singh, the campaign has averaged 25 to 30 daily registrations and 20 installations, turning awareness drives like “Surya Sabha’s” into a grassroots movement.

The scheme’s appeal lies in its simplicity, up to Rupees 78,000 subsidy for 1 to 3 kW systems, enabling 300 free monthly units and bill savings of Rupees 15,000 to 20,000 annually. Monthly reviews with vendors and banks have streamlined processes, while honoring early adopters has sparked community momentum. In a state where rural electrification lags, this 664 new applications last month alone signals a renewable revolution.

For India’s net zero ambitions, Rajnandgaon exemplifies execution: transparent monitoring, vendor coordination, and local engagement have scaled a national scheme to district dominance. Scaling nationwide requires similar vigilance, especially in remote areas. This solar surge isn’t just power; it’s prosperity, proving clean energy can electrify lives as much as homes.
