Wildlife Conservation: Madhya Pradesh’s Commitment

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Dr Mohan Yadav released 53 gharials and 25 turtles into Kuno river at Kuno National Park, reaffirming the state’s priority on protecting endangered species amid rising eco tourism. The gharials, of Gharialus gangeticus species with 28 males and 25 females, alongside Three Stripped Roof Turtle, bolster aquatic biodiversity in a landscape now hosting 48 cheetahs under PM Modi’s Project Cheetah.

Speaking post release, Dr Yadav highlighted systematic gharial and turtle conservation as part of broader wildlife restoration, linking it to tourism growth with increased visitors this year. Kuno’s transformation from cheetah reintroduction site to integrated habitat underscores Madhya Pradesh emergence as wildlife hub, blending cheetah safaris with riverine reptile recovery. Such initiatives validate the state’s dual focus on ecological revival and economic gains through nature based livelihoods.

The event, attended by BJP state president Hemant Khandelwal, former forest minister Ramniwas Rawat, Sahariya Development Authority chair Tursanpal Baria and local MLA’s, signals political heft behind conservation. Principal Secretary Forests Sandeep Yadav and DFO’s coordinated the release, with National Chambal Sanctuary gifting mementos.

Challenges persist, river pollution, illegal fishing and habitat fragmentation threaten gharial survival despite captive breeding successes. True success hinges on anti encroachment drives, community patrols and prey base restoration for both apex predators and aquatic reptiles.

Dr Yadav’s hands on approach elevates Kuno beyond cheetah headlines, positioning Madhya Pradesh as guardian of Gangetic species. If sustained, these efforts can restore ecological balance while powering green tourism, proving conservation pays when prioritised.
