When governance meets genuine community will, extraordinary results follow. Durg district in Chhattisgarh has shown exactly this through its “Mor Gaon Mor Paani Mahabhiyan” a water conservation drive that transcended bureaucratic targets to become a true jan andolan. Under Collector Abhijeet Singh’s leadership, the district constructed 32,058 rainwater harvesting structures across PMAY Gramin homes in just 15 days, setting a national benchmark for scale and speed.
This wasn’t mere infrastructure work. The campaign’s Phase 1 saw 1,764 soak pits built in PMAY homes within two hours earning a Golden Book of Records entry. Phase 2 added 12,418 more soak pits on December 8, while 23,889 contour and water absorption trenches completed the effort. From check dams to rooftop harvesting systems, Durg deployed every tool in the water conservation toolbox, all fueled by MGNREGA-backed community labor.
What elevates this beyond statistics is the transformation in public consciousness. Rural volunteers didn’t just participate they owned the mission. The campaign’s theme, “Ekec Goth, Ekec Bani, Boond Boond Bachabo Paani 2.0,” resonated because it spoke a local language of responsibility. PMAY homes that once stood vulnerable now anchor groundwater recharge for entire villages.
Durg proves three truths about sustainable development. First, leadership matters: clear directives from the top create momentum. Second, community ownership converts schemes into movements government money built structures, but people’s hands gave them permanence. Third, scale follows simplicity, low-cost soak pits and trenches deliver disproportionate impact.
Other districts must study this blueprint closely. Water security isn’t solved by megaprojects alone, it’s won village by village, household by household. When every PMAY home becomes a recharge point, when MGNREGA evolves from wage scheme to conservation engine, India moves closer to “Har Ghar Jal Sanchay.” Durg didn’t just conserve water, it conserved hope, proving that collective action can outpace climate crisis itself.
