The women of Kondagaon have shown how training, local resources and market support can turn a small seasonal activity into a meaningful source of income. Through the Lakhpati Didi initiative, women associated with Bihan groups received training in making attractive and marketable Rakhi products at the Rural Self Employment Training Institute.
Their handmade Rakhis, including those made from paddy, reflect both creativity and the value of local resources. The sale stall at the district office gave these women more than a place to display their products. It provided them with direct market exposure and encouragement from officials, employees and citizens who purchased their products.
The appreciation shown by the Collector, including the purchase of paddy Rakhis, sends an important message. Women entrepreneurs need not only training, but also recognition, market access and public support. A product can become a sustainable livelihood only when it reaches consumers at a fair price.
The Lakhpati Didi initiative is valuable because it seeks to make women earners and entrepreneurs rather than passive beneficiaries. Skill development in handicrafts, food processing, agriculture and other local activities can create employment without forcing rural women to leave their communities.
Such efforts should be supported through regular training, better packaging, digital marketing, exhibitions and permanent sales platforms. Local products should also be linked with government offices, schools, festivals and online markets to ensure steady demand.
The Rakhis made by Kondagaon’s women carry more than traditional sentiment. They represent self confidence, creativity and economic independence. With the right support, local skills can become strong businesses and women can become important drivers of rural development.
