Ujjwala in Ambagarh Chauki

Hemlata Yadav of Sangli village once cooked on wood and dung cakes. Her kitchen filled with smoke. Gathering fuel took time and effort. Every meal carried a health cost. Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, she received a free LPG connection and a gas stove. The smoke eased. The work lightened. Her daily routine became simpler. For her household, this is not just a change of fuel. It is a gain in health, time and dignity.

This is more than a subsidy story. It is a public health intervention that sits inside the kitchen. Indoor air pollution from solid fuels harms lungs and eyes. It hits women and children hardest. It adds to the burden of respiratory illness and burns. When a family shifts to LPG, the air clears. Cooking becomes faster and more predictable. Time saved can go to childcare, study or rest. The Seva Sankalp Abhiyan aims to bring such welfare gains to the last mile. Hemlata’s experience shows how a scheme can change a day to day reality when it reaches the right person.

Why does this matter at scale. Millions of Indian homes have moved from chulhas to cylinders since Ujjwala began. The aggregate effect is visible in reduced smoke, lower drudgery and fewer health shocks. It is visible in the way women plan their day when they do not have to spend hours collecting fuel. It is visible in the safety of a kitchen without open flames and flying embers. For Chhattisgarh, where service and welfare are central to the government’s pitch, clean cooking is a direct way to deliver on that promise.

The real test will be sustained use and affordability. Will refills be accessible and priced so that families do not slide back to wood when cash is tight. Will delivery networks reach remote villages without delay. Will awareness campaigns keep highlighting the health benefits so that behaviour change sticks. And will complementary measures, such as better ventilation and safe cylinder handling, be promoted to reduce accidents. If these pieces fall into place, Ujjwala can do more than distribute connections. It can secure long term adoption and lasting health gains.

For Hemlata, the change is tangible and personal. Her kitchen is cleaner. Her work is lighter. Her day has more room. That is the true measure of this push: not just the connections issued, but the smoke removed and the time returned.
