A New Era of Connectivity: Rural Roads Transform Chhattisgarh

In the last twenty five years, Chhattisgarh has witnessed a remarkable transformation with a vast network of rural roads linking villages across the state. What was once a region of isolated and inaccessible hamlets has today become an example of progress and inclusion. The Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY), launched in 2000 by former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, has been the cornerstone of this change, turning mobility into a gateway for social and economic growth.

At the time of state formation, rural Chhattisgarh had barely 4,200 kilometers of roads. Today, that number exceeds 40,000 kilometers, marking one of the most successful rural infrastructure expansions in India. With better connectivity, public services now reach every home: farmers can transport their produce to procurement centers with ease, essential commodities reach villages through the Public Distribution System, and healthcare and nutrition programs operate more efficiently.

In the early sixteen years alone, more than 32,000 kilometers of roads and hundreds of bridges were built, connecting over 10,000 habitations. Overall, 8,310 roads and 426 major bridges spanning 40,415 kilometers have been completed under PMGSY. The second and third phases focused on strengthening and upgrading older roads with 534 new routes and 82 bridges now operational. Notably, every project sanctioned under these phases has been completed.

In left wing extremism affected districts, the scheme has proven to be a force for peace and development. More than 12,400 kilometers of roads have been built in such regions, connecting 3,853 remote settlements and giving people access to education, employment, healthcare, and security. The establishment of these roads has played a crucial role in integrating marginalized communities into mainstream development.

Speaking at the Chhattisgarh Rajyotsav, Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the state’s progress, recalling his visits before its formation. “There was a time when many villages were inaccessible, but in 25 years the transformation has been extraordinary. Roads spanning 40,000 kilometers now connect village to village,” he said.

Deputy Chief Minister and Panchayat and Rural Development Minister Vijay Sharma noted that these roads are not just symbols of connectivity but of empowerment. Under Chief Minister Vishnudev Sai’s leadership, the state is preparing to launch the fourth phase of PMGSY, which will focus on tribal and remote areas. Over 8,000 new kilometers of roads will be built under schemes like Dharti Aaba Janjatiya Gram Utkarsh Yojana, PM Janman, and Aspirational District initiatives.

Through stronger roads, Chhattisgarh has built stronger communities, a living example of how infrastructure can drive both social transformation and self reliance.
