Strategic Convergence: India Jordan Joint Statement Signals Deepened Partnership

Prime Minister Narendra Modis visit to Jordan on 15 16 December 2025, at the invitation of His Majesty King Abdullah II bin Al Hussein, has culminated in a comprehensive joint statement that reaffirms the enduring trust, warmth and mutual goodwill between the two nations. Marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, the visit provided a timely platform to positively assess the multifaceted India Jordan partnership spanning politics, economy, defence, security, culture and education.

The leaders warmly recalled previous meetings in New York (September 2019), Riyadh (October 2019), Dubai (December 2023) and Italy (June 2024), while appreciating excellent cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels. Their bilateral and extended talks on 15 December in Amman focused on expanding collaboration in areas of mutual interest and advancing developmental aspirations as reliable partners.

Political Relations
Both leaders expressed satisfaction with regular political dialogues and joint working groups across sectors. They welcomed the outcomes of the fourth round of political consultations held in Amman on 29 April 2025 and agreed to hold the fifth round in New Delhi. Committed to sustaining positive momentum, high level exchanges and ongoing cooperation, the statement underscores the use of established mechanisms to strengthen ties.

Economic Cooperation
Noting robust bilateral trade valued at 2.3 billion dollars in 2024 making India Jordans third largest trading partner the leaders agreed on the need to diversify traded goods. They welcomed the convening of the 11th Joint Trade and Economic Committee in the first half of 2026 and the India Jordan Business Forum on 16 December, which brought together high level delegations to bolster trade and investment.

Emphasising customs cooperation, they committed to fully utilising the agreement on mutual administrative assistance, facilitating information sharing, efficient customs procedures and combating evasion. Jordans strategic location and logistics capabilities were highlighted as opportunities to strengthen economic ties, particularly through enhanced transport and logistics connectivity as a shared strategic asset with private sector involvement.

Technology and Education
Reviewing cooperation in digital technology and education, both sides agreed to expand institutional collaboration for capacity building, feasibility studies on digital transformation solutions and sharing Indias DPI experiences via a Letter of Intent. Interest was expressed in expanding facilities at the India Jordan IT Centre of Excellence at Al Hussein Technical University and strengthening its programmes. Commitments extended to safe, reliable and inclusive digital ecosystems, with ITEC slots for Jordan increased from 35 to 50.

Health, Agriculture and Water
Leaders committed to advancing telemedicine and health workforce training, recognising health and pharmaceuticals as pillars of public welfare and SDGs. In agriculture, they reviewed ongoing fertiliser cooperation (especially phosphates) and agreed to enhance technology and expertise exchange. A new MoU on water resources management covers conservation techniques, capacity building, climate adaptation, planning and groundwater management.

Green and Sustainable Development
Discussions on climate, environment and renewables led to an MoU on technical cooperation, encompassing personnel exchanges, training, workshops, non commercial technology transfer and joint research/projects.

Cultural Ties and Connectivity
Welcoming the 2025 2029 Cultural Exchange Programme and twinning of Petra and Ellora Caves, leaders supported expanded exchanges in music, dance, theatre, arts, archives, libraries and literature. Direct connectivity was recognised as vital for trade, tourism and people to people ties.

Multilateral Engagement
King Abdullah praised Indias leadership in ISA, CDRI and GBA, welcoming Jordans intent to join. Both affirmed biofuels as sustainable low carbon alternatives for emission reductions and development.

In conclusion, Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude for the warm hospitality, extending best wishes to Jordan. King Abdullah reciprocated, wishing success to India. This joint statement charts a roadmap for elevated partnership, blending historical bonds with future oriented collaboration.
