Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said on Friday that the Char Dham road project has reached nearly 90 percent completion under the guidance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as a landmark infrastructure achievement for the hill state. He said the Rs 12,000 crore project has made travel smoother across the four pilgrimage routes and improved movement in a large part of Uttarakhand’s mountain region.
Dhami made the remarks while highlighting how the project has changed connectivity for pilgrims, local residents and businesses dependent on seasonal tourism. He said the road network has reduced travel hardship in difficult terrain and is helping link remote areas more effectively with major centres. According to him, the project is not only important for religious tourism but also for the wider economic and social development of the state.
The chief minister said the Char Dham road project is especially significant because Uttarakhand faces constant challenges from steep gradients, fragile geography and weather related disruptions. In such conditions, better road access strengthens both safety and mobility. He added that improved connectivity will support emergency services, supply movement and disaster response in the hill districts.
Dhami also underlined the larger development impact of the project, saying it will benefit local markets, hospitality units, transport operators and small businesses that depend on the flow of pilgrims and tourists. Better roads, he said, will help extend the tourism season and improve access to remote habitations along the route.
The chief minister credited Prime Minister Modi’s leadership for pushing forward major infrastructure work in the state and said the project reflects the Centre’s commitment to the development of Uttarakhand. He added that once fully completed, the road project will serve as a long term asset for both pilgrimage and regional growth.
The Char Dham road project is one of the most closely watched infrastructure initiatives in the Himalayas, linking the sacred shrines of Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath through improved road access. Officials say the project is expected to bring lasting benefits to pilgrims, residents and the state economy by making travel safer, faster and more dependable.
